USM INTERNATIONAL CARNIVAL: Steers team to title as she wins best player award again

GEORGE TOWN: NURUL Adha Abu Bakar became the only person to have won the best player award in the women's Open category for the second consecutive year at the USM-Penang International Netball Carnival recently.
The lanky 19-year-old lass won the award last year while representing Bukit Jalil Sports School and this year, she clinched the title as a player of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).
Nurul Adha said she had not expected to win again but was very happy to have been accorded the honour.
Nurul Adha played an inspiring game to lead UPM to their first ever win in the women's Open category of the 23rd USM-Penang International Netball Carnival at the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) mini stadium in Minden.
The varsity teams, who had thrashed The Legend 15-2 in the semi-finals and remained unbeaten through-out the competition, comfortably defeated Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) 13-9. UTM collected the Fair Play award.
In a repeat of last year's final, defending champions Legend 'A' defeated Royale 11-7 to retain the men's Open title in an exciting yet fun-filled final.
Last year, Legend thrashed Royale 15-4 in the final. Legend 'A's Muhamad Khawari Mustafa @ Awang was awarded the best player trophy while Royale collected the Fair Play trophy.
In the USM women's Closed final, defending champions USM Healthy Campus from Kelantan maintained their grip on the title when they thrashed KSS USM Main Campus 13-6 to retain the title for the fifth consecutive year.
Meanwhile, organising chairman Nadhratun Naim Jamaluddin said the 23rd USM-Penang International Netball Carnival 2013 was accorded the recognition by the Malaysia Book of Records for hosting the "Largest Netball Competition" in the country for the third time with 178 teams, including 30 teams from Sri Lanka, Singapore and Australia.
She said the two-day competition offered a total cash prize of RM16,100 and was organised fully by the university's more than 200 female undergraduates, with guidance from the sports and recreation centre headed by its director Muhammad Mohd Hanif.
Nadhratun Naim said for the first time, orphans from Wisma Anak Yatim (Perempuan) Pulau Pinang and Rumah Kediaman Abu Nur from Pengkalan Hulu, Perak participated in the competition.
She said the expenses were fully borne by USM.
